Peppercombe Bothy to Bucks Hillfort Circular

Running trail

This is a four mile circular route starting and finishing at Peppercombe Bothy. If you're starting the walk at the top of the valley, near Horns Cross, walk down into the valley, and begin the walk from step one, which will make the walk nearly a mile longer.

This route can be made a shorter circular of just over 2.5 miles, see steps below. The route incorporates the South West coast path, wooded valley, quiet lane and stunning views of Bideford Bay and out to Lundy.

From Peppercombe Bothy, continue down the track (initially heading for coast path), over the bridge and turn left following the coast path signed Bucks Mills.

Continue straight on following signs for Bucks Mills

Upon reaching the finger post either continue straight on towards Bucks Mills for the longer route or turn left signed Green Lane for the shorter route, crossing 3 stiles and turning immediately left after the last stile. Shorter route jump to step 7.

Continue through the next wicket gate and follow the green lane until the top.

Follow the track up to the quiet lane and follow it around to the left. Watch out for traffic.

Turn left after 'Northway Farm Cottages' down a dead end lane unsuitable for motors.

Peppercombe Bothy to Bucks Hillfort Circular


The route is hilly and undulating with steps, pedestrian gates, bridges and stiles if using the shorter circular route. The route is uneven and can be slippery when wet. There is one bench along the route with fantstic views out to Clovelly and Lundy. The route is unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs as some sections are a little narrower and the route contains steps and stiles. The route is accessible to walkers, joggers to runners. Due to the number of trees along this route it is advised you only use it during daylight hours and not in windy conditions. Dogs are welcome under close control.

How to get here

Peppercombe Valley
By train

Barnstaple, 14.5 miles (23km) from Horns Cross.

By road

From Bude: Take the A39 through Kilkhampton, continue on past Clovelly and Bucks Cross. On arrival at Horns Cross turn left next to the Coach and Horses pub and walk down the lane to the National Trust Gate on the right, follow the track to the bottom. No parking in the valley unless staying in holiday accommodation. 

From Bideford: Take the A39, past Fairy Cross, arriving at Horns Cross. Walk up to the Coach and Horses pub and follow the lane past pub car park to the National Trust gate on the right, follow the track to the bottom.

By foot

On the South West coast path between Abbotsham and Bucks Mills.

By bicycle

Directions same as by road, please be aware these are busy main roads.
