Why I volunteer...
'Newly widowed and bored of the oil industry in Aberdeen I moved back home to Sussex to look for new challenges. Within two weeks I found myself at Bodiam Castle learning all about medieval life. This was quite a change for me and a bit daunting at first, but with the support of a bunch of friendly volunteers and staff I was soon leading school groups around the castle and helping out with a variety of events - armour talks, guided walks and Father Christmas' grotto to name a few.
I enjoy being able to make a difference to a visitor's day out. I love the variety of things I can get involved in, the freedom of choosing the hours I volunteer and being outside seeing the castle in all weathers.
It's a special place which has definitely given me a new purpose in life, more confidence, lots of new friends and it's fun.'
Janet Crossley, costumed and school activities volunteer.
My story ....
'As a retired architect I took the opportunity of becoming a volunter at Bodiam Castle. In many ways this was to serve myself, rather than the National Trust, as I needed a new routine, and already enjoyed voluntary teaching at primary level elsewhere.
My interest was in medieval warfare and weapons and the subject suited my form of interactive teaching. Both for school visits and special events I have had a great time working with the staff at Bodiam as over the years the emphasis on teaching methods at Bodiam has changed and improved.
For anyone seeking such fulfilment I would recommend that they consider volunteer work without any hesitation. Give a little back after you have taken so much from society.'
Robin Redsull, costumed and school activities volunteer.
