Hosey Common to Mariners Hill loop walk

Explore Mariners Hill on this circular trail, which takes in fantastic views over Chartwell and the Weald in Kent. An extension of the Westerham to Chartwell walk, this loop crosses through National Trust and Squerryes Court land and has been made possible by the support of the Warde family.

Parking safety

The walk starts at the public car park at Hosey Common. This is outside of the National Trust's care and parking here is at your own risk.

Start point

Hosey Common car park, Westerham TN16 1PL. Grid ref: TQ450530.

Step 1

Start your walk from the Hosey Common public car park. Facing away from the road, head along the footpath to the right that goes through the woods. Follow the path around to the edge of the wood.

Step 2

Turn right down a narrow track and into the small, pretty village of French Street. Take the next footpath on your right and continue down this public footpath, keeping left at the fork. Keep going until you reach Hosey Common Lane.

Step 3

Cross the road and continue along the footpath immediately ahead, bearing left. Continue down the public footpath until you reach Mapleton Road, with the entrance to Chartwell on your left.

Step 4

Cross the road and go up the steps, following the fairly steep climb to the first finger post. Take the left-hand fork and continue along the path that runs parallel with Mapleton Road.

Step 5

When the path descends and comes to a four-way junction, turn right.

Step 6

At the next junction turn left. This path takes you alongside a field with stunning views.

Step 7

Turn right up the steps just after passing the second bench.

Step 8

At the top of the bank turn left between two large beech trees.

Step 9

Turn right at the corner of the fenced field and continue past the stone monument on the right and cross the field ahead of you. The path bends around to the right passing a stone bench and view point. Entering the woods, stay on the path walking parallel with the road to the left.

Step 10

The path eventually turns right and it's here that you'll see a National Trust sign and a bridleway sign on the roadside to your left. Drop down onto the road briefly and pick up the bridleway as it climbs the hill to the right.

Step 11

At the top of the hill as the path starts to level out you'll come to a left fork by a finger post. Turn left here and continue straight over the vehicle track. At the next fork marked by a post, keep right.

Step 12

Continue down the hill back towards Mapleton Road. Once at the road, cross back to the public footpath to the left of Chartwell's entrance.

Step 13

From here, retrace your steps from the start by following the path back to French Street and then through the woods back to Hosey Common car park.

End point

Hosey Common car park, Westerham TN16 1PL. Grid ref: TQ450530.
