This is where we answer some of the frequently asked questions about our gift cards. You can also find out how to check your gift card balance and more.
Where can I buy National Trust gift cards?
Our gift cards are available to buy at most National Trust shops, the National Trust online shop and in larger Sainsbury’s and WH Smith stores.
Can I buy a digital gift card?
Yes, these are available from our online shop allowing you to send a digital gift card on an email with a personal message from you. This is a great option when you need to send a gift quickly.
How can I check my gift card balance?
If you are in store, the shop assistant can check the balance of your card and digital gift card. Alternatively, you can check your gift card using the website www.showmybalance.com - you just need to enter the card number and the card’s PIN number which is found under the scratch off panel or next to the gift card number on digital gift cards. If your digital gift card does not have a PIN then contact the Gift Card team on 01793 817803 who will be able to assist.
What value of National Trust gift cards can I buy?
The amount which can be added to a single card will depend on where the card is purchased from.
National Trust shops - £1 to £1,000
National Trust Online shop - £10 to £500 in any multiple of £5
Sainsburys – a set value of £25
WH Smith – any amount between £5 to £200
Where can I redeem my National Trust gift card?
Our gift cards can be redeemed at most National Trust properties (in England, Wales and Northern Ireland), in our shops, cafés and admission points or used towards membership fees. They can also be used for National Trust holiday cottage telephone bookings. Cards can now also be used when staying at the three Historic House Hotels – Hartwell House, Bodysgallen Hall & Middlethorpe Hall.
We’re unable to take gift card payments for any other telephone purchase or within the National Trust online shop.
Are there any properties where I can’t use my gift card?
Gift cards can only be sold and redeemed at on-site outlets operated by the National Trust with card payment machines - they cannot be used at properties that haven’t got them.
• These are usually our very small properties which may not have a shop or restaurant.
• Properties operated by others such as donor families, local councils or other organisations.
• On- site outlets operated by other commercial organisations such as catering outlets.
The main exception properties are Giant’s Causeway, St Michael’s Mount, Porth y Swnt - Aberdaron shop, Tatton Park, Wakehurst Place, Buscot Park and Waddesdon Manor where gift cards cannot be redeemed or purchased.
Are there any products I can’t redeem my gift card against?
Gift cards can’t be used in our shops against the purchase of additional gift cards, virtual gifts or original artworks.
Can I redeem my gift card against National Trust membership?
Yes, you can do this when visiting a property as we’re unable to take payment for membership with a gift card online or by telephone.
How can I use my gift card against National Trust Holiday Cottage bookings?
Gift cards can be accepted as part or full payment for Holiday Cottage stays.
If you wish to pay or part-pay for your stay with a gift card you will need to book via the National Trust Holiday Cottages Contact Centre on 0344 800 2070 (available Monday to Friday from 9.00 - 21.00, Saturday 9.00 -19.00 and Sunday & Bank Holidays 9.00 -13.00). Please note our gift cards cannot be used as a payment method for online bookings on the Holiday Cottages website.
Our booking agent will take the details of the gift card from you and the amount spent will be deducted from the gift card balance.
What if there isn’t enough credit on my gift card for my purchase?
If there isn’t enough credit on your gift card for your current purchase the shop assistant will request an additional payment method from you for the difference.
Do I get change if I buy something with a gift card?
No, you won’t receive any change after a purchase with a gift card. Instead, the remaining balance will be updated after each purchase and shown on your printed receipt. This balance can be used against future purchases.
If I want to return an item I bought using a gift card what happens with the refund?
If you return an item which you bought using a gift card, the refund will be made as a credit to that gift card or on a new card if you no longer have it.
Can I cash in a gift card?
There is no cash alternative to a gift card – they cannot be exchanged for cash.
Is there an expiry date for my gift card?
Yes, your gift card will either expire 24 months after the date of issue or 24 months from the last transaction (which ever comes later). A transaction is a sale or a top up which is adding money to your card balance and can only be done when visiting a National Trust location.
In May 2017 we enhanced our expiry date policy to be in line with other major gift card brands allowing cards to be valid for 24 months from the last transaction, being a sale or a top up.
Any remaining balance is cancelled on expiry.
What happens if I lose my gift card or it gets stolen or damaged?
Please treat a gift card as if it were cash as we are unable to refund or replace lost, stolen or damaged cards.
Can I still use my paper gift vouchers?
Yes, these can still be spent when visiting our places up until the expiry date printed on them.
