Gift cards: frequently asked questions
This is where we answer some of the frequently asked questions about our gift cards. You can also find out how to check your gift card balance and more.
Where can I buy National Trust gift cards?
Our physical gift cards are available to buy at most National Trust shops, on our online shop and in larger Sainsbury’s, Tesco and WH Smith stores.
Can I buy a digital gift card?
Yes, these are available from our online shop. As they’re in digital format, they can be sent via email with a personal message from you. And they're a great last-minute option.
Where can I redeem my National Trust gift card?
Gift cards can be redeemed in National Trust cafés, shops (including our online shop) and at admission points - for entry and membership. They can also be used for National Trust holidays when booked by phone and when you stay at a Historic House Hotel - Hartwell House, Bodysgallen Hall & Middlethorpe Hall.
Our National Trust holidays, include stays in holiday cottages, bunkhouses & bothy stays plus selected campsites.
We’re unable to take gift card payments over the phone for online shop purchases but they can be used for online orders as long as the gift card has an 8-digit PIN, found under the silver scratch off panel.
How can I book a ticket and pay with my National Trust gift card?
The booking system only accepts payment by credit/debit card or Paypal. Follow these steps to book your ticket and ensure you take your gift card with you to pay at a till point when you arrive.
- Within the booking system select the number of tickets you want under the National Trust member (adult or child aged 5+) option.
- At the Checkout stage use the membership number field to enter - To pay with gift card on arrival. Staff will process the gift card payment when you arrive at the property. If you forget your gift card you will be asked to pay by another method.
For those who do not have access to the internet to book online you can call our booking team on 0344 249 1895 who will complete this process for you.
How do I spend my gift card in the online shop?
When ready to pay for items in your basket click Proceed to Checkout.
- Complete the Delivery Details section
- In the Payment Details section tick Our Agreement and payment options will show, including gift card
- Click the downward pointing arrow next to Apply Gift Card which will reveal the spaces to enter the details of your card
- Enter the 16 digit gift card number, without any spaces or dashes
- Enter the 8 digit PIN (found under the silver scratch off panel) in the box below
- Click Apply and you will see the gift card amount added to the Order Summary on the right
- Complete your purchase by continuing to pay any balance remaining
Are there any properties where I can’t use my gift card?
Gift cards can only be redeemed at locations that operate the standard National Trust payment system. They cannot be used at properties that operate different payment systems.
- These are usually our very small properties
- Properties operated by others such as donor families, local councils or other organisations
- On-site outlets operated by other commercial organisations such as catering outlets
The main exception properties are Giant’s Causeway, St Michael’s Mount, Porth y Swnt - Aberdaron shop, Tatton Park, Wakehurst Place, Buscot Park and Ascott where gift cards cannot be purchased or redeemed.
Are there any products I can’t redeem my gift card against?
Gift cards can’t be used against the purchase of additional gift cards.
Can I redeem my gift card against National Trust membership?
Membership can be purchased using a gift card at most Visitor Reception areas of properties.
Gift membership packs (for self-use) are available via the online shop and can also be purchased using gift cards.
Can I use my gift card to renew my membership?
This can be done when visiting a property when payment with a gift card can be taken with any balance due paid with cash or a credit or debit card. Any balance due cannot be paid by direct debit.
How can I use my gift card against National Trust Holiday bookings?
1. Holiday cottages, bunkhouse and bothy stays
Gift cards can be accepted as part or full payment for holiday cottages, as well as bunkhouse and bothy stays when booked via the National Trust Holiday Contact Centre on 0344 800 2070. The booking agent will take the details of the gift card from you and the amount spent will be deducted from the gift card balance.
We’re unable to take gift card payments via the Holidays online booking website.
Selected campsites are able to accept part of full payment with a gift card when booked by telephone, directly with the selected site. Unfortunately, gift cards cannot be used for payment for online bookings. Sites accepting gift cards include Lake District campsites - Great Langdale, Low Wray, Wasdale & Eskdale; and Teneriffe Farm Campsite, in Cornwall
I’d like to use the gift card to thank employees or customers – can I buy multiple cards?

How can I check my gift card balance or expiry date?
Visit www.showmybalance.com to check the balance and expiry date of your card directly online. Simply enter the card number and the card’s PIN/Online Access code found under the scratch-off panel or next to the gift card number on digital gift cards.
What if there isn’t enough credit on my gift card for my purchase?
If there isn’t enough credit for your purchase you can pay the difference by another means - cash, credit or debit card. You can also use another gift card to complete a purchase.
Do I get change if I buy something with a gift card?
No, you won’t receive any change after a purchase with a gift card. Instead, the remaining balance will be updated after each purchase and be shown on your receipt. This balance can be used against future purchases.
If I want to return an item I bought using a gift card what happens with the refund?
If you return an item which you bought using a gift card, the refund will be made as a credit to that gift card or to a new card if you no longer have it. We are currently only able to accept shop refunds via the customer service team on 0300 123 2025 between 8am - 5pm (Mon-Fri).
Can I cash in a gift card?
There is no cash alternative to a gift card – they cannot be exchanged for cash.
Is there an expiry date for my gift card?
Due to the continued impact of coronavirus (COVID-19), we have made an additional extension to the expiry period of gift cards due to expire from 1 January 2021 to 30 June 2021. Any cards due to expire in this period have been extended to 30 September 2021.
Your expiry date can be checked by visiting Showmybalance.com and simply entering the 16-digit card number and the card’s PIN/Online Access code found under the scratch-off panel.
Gift cards will either expire 24 months after the date of issue or 24 months from the last transaction (which ever comes later). A transaction is a sale or a top up which is adding money to your card balance and can only be done when visiting a National Trust location.
Any remaining balance is cancelled on expiry.
What happens if I lose my gift card or it gets stolen or damaged?
Please treat a gift card as if it were cash as we are unable to refund or replace lost, stolen or damaged cards.
