Wasdale and Great Langdale campsite upgrades

The interior of the new toilet and shower block at Great Langdale Campsite

We understand the importance of comfortable, clean toilets and a good hot shower when you are camping, so over the winter we'll be upgrading our facilities. There'll be a short period of closure and temporary facilities at Wasdale and some minor disturbance at Great Langdale, so please read on if you intend to stay with us in the next few months.

What's happening at Wasdale Campsite?

We'll be undertaking a major refurbishment of the toilet and shower block as part of the first phase of a wider project to enhance facilities in Wasdale. The second phase of work will start during the winter of 2019/20 to create an improved catering, retail and reception area. This will coincide with improvements to toilets at Lake Head car park, adjacent to the campsite.

It's an exciting project which will help us reach our environmental targets and install technologies for renewable energy. That means your camping fees will support more conservation projects such as looking after the main path up Scafell Pike as well as making your stay more enjoyable.

Wasdale Campsite temporary closure: Sun 6 January - Mon 25 March 2019

To enable us to carry out this work, Wasdale Campsite will be closed for a few weeks followed by a period when the site will partially re-open from 25 March until completion of the project in early May.

Where can I stay while Wasdale Campsite is closed?

Our apologies in advance for any disappointment this may cause. We suggest the following options:

  • Great Langdale Campsite will be open throughout the winter
  • Consider one of our holiday cottages in the valley
  • Tent campers are welcome at the basic Wasdale Head Inn campsite (1km beyond the entrance to Wasdale Campsite). Please note that there is no option to book in advance and there are no options for campervans in the valley during this short period.

Open with temporary facilities at Wasdale: late March - early May

To avoid disappointment over the Easter and early spring period, the campsite will re-open although we'll have temporary facilities in place.

The laundry and drying room will not be available but there'll be a temporary pot wash area, flushing toilets and shower units and service as usual from the reception and shop. During this time, only the low or mid season fees will apply to your stay to reflect the reduced service.

Special access needs

We'll still be able to cater for campers with accessibility needs but we advise contacting the campsite prior to booking to discuss requirements. The newly refurbished facilities block will include a fully accessible WC and shower .

What's happening at Great Langdale Campsite over the winter?

Following on from the refurbishment of the western facility block last winter, we're starting work on upgrading the second toilet and shower block close to the shop and reception.

This work will begin after Christmas and is expected to be completed in early spring. The campsite will remain open for business throughout this period with one fully functioning facility block with its cosy underfloor heating. The shop and reception will be open as usual.

There will be some disturbance on site due to noise and extra vehicles during working hours from Mondays to Fridays only, mainly for the pods and pitches close to the old block and reception area.  We expect this to be kept to an absolute minimum and we hope that it will not detract you from enjoying a great winter camping adventure.

" We hope people will bear with us as we upgrade the campsites. As well as benefitting visitors, the improvements will help us look after the environment and mean we can support more conservation work in the valleys where our campsites are located "
