Scenes from the Stour Valley

Roy Connelly - ‘plein-air’ painter
Published : 25 Apr 2019

Leading ‘plein-air’ painter Roy Connelly’s exhibition ‘Scenes from the Stour Valley’ opens on 4 May 2019 in the Boat House Gallery.

The gallery is ten feet from where John Constable stood painting ‘ Boat-building near Flatford Mill’ now in the V & A Museum.

Roy Connelly’s paintings celebrate the beauty of the Stour Valley in all weather. Look carefully and you can often spot him in a field or by the river with his easel. He works exclusively in oils, painting from direct observation of the landscape.

‘I paint outside throughout the year and in all weathers. My paintings are usually completed in a single session which helps me to capture the time the picture was created as well as the place’ he explains.

He is a member of The British Plein Air Painters which is a group of professional artists that share a passion for painting outdoors, capturing the essence of their surroundings.

Following the success of two Paint out days organised last year in London, British Plein Air Painters are organising a series of new Paint out days in 2019 in various locations in England and on the 21 June they are coming to Flatford. Come and join them!

These outdoor painting days are free, open to all levels, and just a way to have fun painting.
