Walk the route of the old A3
Since the Hindhead tunnel opened in July 2011, we've been working really hard to re-connect the two commons of Hindhead and the Devil's Punch Bowl. Since the closure of the busy road, wildlife has been free to move from one site to another and it's been such a success that Natural England has granted us favourable condition. You can read more about this here, or simply enjoy a stroll along this remarkable new walking route.
Our grazing ponies
Our hardy resident ponies are spending the winter on Hindhead Commons and are helping us by grazing on the grasses and herbs that grow here. By nibbling away on the shoots and roots, they ensure that no one type of plant takes hold and grows too much. They are all chosen to be on site because of their docile and gentle nature. However if you know that your dog chases horses, please keep it on a lead around them as their kick could be painful.
Winter wildlife watch
Look out for rabbits and deer nibbling on grasses and shoots and keep a check up high for soaring buzzards and kestrels, eager for a tasty meal of mice and shrews on a chilly day.
