    This tall, modest building from the 16th century is at the heart of the Hardwick Estate, right by its historic house and gardens where you'll have free entry during opening hours. Head out into the parkland for trails with rolling views, and wind through ancient trees and countryside or follow the sculpture walk displaying the craftsmanship of the Hardwick Masons. Back at your accommodation you'll find plenty of places to relax, from the generous sofas by the woodburner, round the large dining table or in your own garden with tables and chairs. 

    Hardwick Hall is a dramatic Elizabethan masterpiece, built by Bess of Hardwick in the late 1500s and filled with rich furnishings, tapestries and original portraits. It has a fascinating history, and successive generations of her family, the Devonshires, treasured and preserved the estate. 

    You'll have free entry to all National Trust places during your stay. Kedleston Hall, desgined by Robert Adam and with opulent interiors, is just a 15-minute drive away, and Clumber Park is closer to half an hour. It has a more than 3,800 acres of parkland, heath and woods to explore, as well as a Heritage Hub, Discovery Centre, garden and places to eat and shop. You can reach the Peak District in about half an hour.

Hardwick Hall was a location for the 2019 film Mary Queen of Scots, starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie. Hardwick stood in for Hampton Court in the film. Key scenes featuring Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth I and Guy Pierce as William Cecil were shot inside the hall and on the roof.
