    • Discover 400 years of rural life in this hunting lodge turned farmhouse

    • Full of original features, from its timber frame to original rooms and drawings by families who once lived here

    • Surrounded by countryside, with views towards the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) from the bedrooms

This striking house was built in the early 1600s, once at the heart of a significant farm – one of three in Brilley. Many of the original features and personal touches are still in place, giving a glimpse into the elaborate lifestyle enjoyed by the farming families who lived here hundreds of years ago.

The old kitchen has been preserved with its bread ovens, stoves and lots of interesting things for you to look at, while there’s a new modern kitchen with everything you need for your holiday just along the hall. It’s an impressive house with huge oak beams, stone, oak and elm floors and leaded windows, as well as spacious bedrooms and bathrooms and plenty of room to gather, inside and out.

The farmhouse appears in new film Hamnet. Based on Maggie O'Farrell's Sunday Times bestselling novel and directed by Academy Award winning Chloé Zhao, Hamnet tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare's masterpiece, Hamlet. In the film, Cwmmau Farmhouse is Hewlands, the childhood home of Agnes, Shakespeare's wife.

The house has footpaths and a bridleway going by, and is surrounded by fields, wildflower meadows and woodland. The Herefordshire countryside has an abundance of wildlife, walking routes and great views, with Iron Age hillforts, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and ancient woodland to explore. You’ll follow winding lanes to reach this remote part of the Welsh Marches, which has views of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) on a clear day.

You can see the closest of the Black Mountains and Hay Bluff is a popular ascent near Hay-on-Wye, a lovely town known for its bookshops and annual literary festival. You have free entry to National Trust places to visit during your stay, and the closest is The Weir Garden, about half an hour away.

Herefordshire has lots of great places to eat, from country inns using local, seasonal produce to award-winning restaurants. The village of Kington is 5 miles away, and Hereford is 20 miles away.
