Volunteering at Longshaw

Woman stands on rock.

Hello. We’re Chris and Marjorie and we are Welcome Volunteers at Longshaw. Our role is to be a friendly and approachable face to meet and greet visitors. We can give you details of events, the best walking routes for you and your family, and seasonal highlights around the estate. We’ll have a go at answering questions, and if we can’t we’ll try to find someone who can.

Many of our visitors are local, so it’s lovely to see those familiar faces. We also welcome people visiting the estate for the first time, especially during the holidays. They come from around the UK and abroad, and may need a more detailed interpretation of what’s on offer.

We lend a hand clearing tables in the tea-room when it gets busy, or help out at special events, so there is always plenty to do.

Team members have different interests and skills – some know a lot about the history of the estate, others can provide information about the wider area. Between us, our interests cover history, landscape, wildlife and photography, so we are able to point visitors towards the parts of the estate with special flora and fauna, or the best views.  We can usually be found in the car park, near the tea-room, or walking around the estate.

One of the things we really enjoy about volunteering here at Longshaw is that, as well as welcoming people, there are lots of opportunities to become involved in other activities such as:

•    mucking in with the forestry and conservation work
•    helping with route checking for our self-guided walks
•    joining in with children’s craft events
•    supporting events and children’s trails in the holidays

We find volunteering at Longshaw very rewarding; we’ve made lovely friends – other volunteers, great staff and regular visitors and we learn new skills in a beautiful environment.
