Nine things to do this summer
Read on to find out about nine things to do, from crafting rafts to fashioning funny faces, all using natural resources found in the gorge.
1. Go on a scavenger hunt
Saturday 28 July to Sunday 2 September, 10am-4.30pm
Keep your eyes peeled to see how many things you can tick off on your walk. There might even be some of the gorge’s more mystical residents to spot. Check sheets will be available for a donation from visitor reception.
2. Build a mini raft
Saturday 28 July, 1-4pm & Friday 24 August, 10.30am-1.30pm
Make your own mini raft with the help of the ranger team then launch it on the river Lyd to see how well it sails. £2 per person, booking advisable
3. Celebrate world ranger day
Tuesday 31 July, 11am-3pm
Come along to meet the rangers and try something new.
4. Launch a bottle rocket
Monday 6 & Wednesday 29 August, 10.30am-1.30pm
Bring along an empty fizzy pop bottle or borrow one of ours and see how high you can make it fly using just water and air.
5. Build a den
Thursday 9 August, 1.30-3.30pm
Learn how to build a den, the rangers are on call to test your constructions with watering cans, see if you can disappoint them. Then cook up some bread on a stick to eat in the shelter of your den. £4 per child, £2 per adult, booking essential
6. Make a home for wildlife
Monday 13 August, 10.30am-1.30pm
Build a bug home for all sorts of creepy crawlies and tick off one of the 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾. £2 per person, booking advisable
7. Invite in a pixie
Saturday 4 August, 11am-2pm
Get creative and decorate a miniature door for a Lydford pixie, or any magical creature you like. £3 per door, booking advisable
8. Create a woodland face
Sunday 19 August, 10.30-1.30pm
Create your own funny face sculpture for your garden or home using local wood and basic hand tools. All materials supplied with full instruction from the ranger team. £3 per sculpture, booking advisable
9. Get messy with nature
Wednesday 15 August, 1-3pm
Make your own natural paints and brushes to create a work of art or just have fun.
