Stableyard Gallery: Park Life - A solo exhibition by Claire Chandler

Part of a picture by artist Claire Chandler entitled Park Life

This exhibition is a free event and runs from 28 July to 19 August 2018. Open daily from 10am to 5pm.

About the exhibition

This is a contemporary exhibition displaying a series of colourful, vibrant oil paintings on board and canvas interpreting the light, colour and essence of the local landscape.

Claire's most recent works evolve from charcoal drawings, pen sketches, photos and written notes about the landscape, its light, colour and movement.  These records have become a catalyst for her paintings which, rather than being a visual representation of a place, represent a memory of the location and her personal response to being there.

“Sometimes I become so absorbed in the painting process that little is recognisable from the original sketch when I work onto primed wooden boards, the solid surface allows me to scrape and scratch into the piece, I can move the paint around freely and then I often sand down areas I choose to rework.  I find this process of layering paint develops the surface texture and gives the painting the depth I am aiming for.” Claire Chandler.

About the artist

Claire Chandler graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from The University of Northumbria in 1997 with the Terry Stephenson Prize. She has since been runner up for the Celeste Art Prize and regularly exhibits her work in and around London.

Claire Chandler was born in Hereford yet spent much of her childhood living abroad. This developed into a love of travel and experiencing new places.

She has lived and worked in Carshalton for the last 10 years and has found that her recent paintings have become more concerned with the local area over this time.

“My work is a direct response to my surroundings, visual memories of places I have lived, travelled to or explored. Colour, shape and form evoke responses in both the artist and the spectator – often these responses are indefinable. Through a layering of colour and a richness of surface I invite the viewer to wander and explore, creating their own personal journey.”

Claire runs art workshops and classes from her home studio, is an art tutor at Sutton College and belongs to a supportive local artist network, the Carshalton Artists who organise the Carshalton Artists Open Studios (CAOS) each summer.
