Interior Worlds: Behind the Glass

Thomas Chippendale pier glass at Nostell

Thomas Chippendale is one of the most significant and influential designers in English history. Join us as we celebrate 'the Shakespeare of furniture' with a packed programme of exhibitions, events and activities.

Chippendale worked with Robert Adam to create a new world of interiors for their prestigious client, Rowland Winn. From a simple chopping block to complete rooms in the latest Chinese fashions, Chippendale’s firm supplied over 100 items of furniture, wallpaper and textiles for the West Yorkshire mansion.

Nostell’s world-class collection showcases the full range of objects and services that Chippendale designed and provided, including bespoke one-of-a-kind pieces and a unique archive of letters and invoices revealing the man behind the famous brand.

A window into the 18th century

Chippendale's legacy at Nostell is a window into the world of fashion, innovation and social ambition during the 1760s and 1770s.

Step inside the grand interiors on the first floor and get a taste of the roller coaster life of a top end designer and his demanding client through exciting new ways of story-telling.

In 2019 we’re shining a spotlight on the most opulent of these bespoke spaces, the Chinese-inspired State Apartment. Discover the stories behind the showpiece mirror at the centre of this suite as it is taken off the wall for the first time in living memory.
