Dovetail, Biscuit, Splat

Thomas Chippendale has inspired designer-makers through centuries and his influence can still be felt today. Get inspiration from his designs in the house and put them to a test in the workshop.

We are celebrating the diversity of Chippendale’s career, in a range of creative activities for families. This summer we are having fun with marbling paper and using it in a variety of creative pursuits. Join us in the house for Dovetail, Biscuit, Splat workshops on Thursdays and Fridays from 1-4pm in school holidays to try out different materials tools and techniques and discover the designer within you.

The marbling workshops are perfect for families with littlies, who like taking their time to create a piece of art all together. Volunteer family champions are on hand to help you with the different marbling techniques from mixing the paints to splattering and combing. Don't forget to take your little ones' masterpieces home with you.

Dovetail, Biscuit, Splat workshops are also great for the slightly older artistic youngsters. For inspiration, have a look at the original Chippendale-supplied marbled papers on display in the Billiard Room. These were used as book endpapers and furniture lining at Nostell. To learn more about the original marbling techniques visit Giles Round's Obelisk Marbling company on the ground floor of the house. Ask the volunteer makers about different patterns and methods and put your skills to the test in the Workshop. Can you create your own marbling pattern?
