Nunnington Hall up Bank and round Rye walk
Stretch your legs on this walk starting at our special place before heading up Caulkleys Bank and round the River Rye walk.
Leave Nunnington Hall through the main gates, don't go over the bridge. Cross the road with care and bear right onto Low Street.
Continue along Church Street, bending left and uphill past the Church.
At the junction, carry straight onto a rough track following a fingerpost towards 'Stonegrave 1 mile'.
At the top of the bank, you reach a three way finger sign, turn left at this point towards the Avenue.
View from Caulkleys Bank
Enjoy the panoramic views from Caulkleys Bank
On reaching the road, cross over to the wide verge and enjoy the stunning views. Follow the finger post to West Ness along the crest of Caulkleys Bank.
The highest point on the Bank
A trig point shows the highest point on the Bank.
Cross the stone track above Stampers Wood and follow the public bridleway, which is flanked by hedgerows.
After passing farm buildings the bridleway sinks into a stone-bottomed track as it descends towards the lane near West Ness.
On meeting the tarmac lane continue straight ahead towards Kirkbymoorside, rather than turning left to Nunnington.
After 250 metres, the road bends sharply left, then passes farm buildings, a disused chapel and a phone box. Do not cross the bridge over the River Rye, turn left on the footpath to 'Nunnington 1.25 miles'.
The path follows the river upstream back to Nunnington. You'll pass the Old Mill with its nearby weir.
Follow waymarkers away from the river to skirt around the boundary of Nunnington Hall. Turn right at the road and head back towards the Hall.
Return to the Hall
Cross the fields and you'll return to Nunnington Hall from the South.
