Lundy Bay and Port Quin circular walk near Pentire
This circular walk includes a clifftop section of the South West Coast Path, taking in Lundy Bay, the former fishing village of Port Quin and the summit of Trevan Point, with views of Doyden Castle and the Rumps headlands. There's also an option to start at Port Quin and walk the route in reverse.

Start point

Step 1
Leave the car park and cross the road with care. Go through the gate opposite and follow the path through the lightly wooded valley. After about 1/4 mile (400m), there's a footpath off to the left forming part of the South West Coast Path. Ignore this path and bear right along the path you're on, with the sea to your left. When the path forks, take the next left. Continue down the path to the beach at Lundy Bay.
Step 2
Leaving the beach, follow the path up to Pennywilgie Point and down to Epphaven Cove.
Step 3
From Epphaven Cove, climb up to Trevan Point then continue down the coast path towards Gilson's Cove. Carry on along the path and at the fork, turn left.
Step 4
At the stone pillar, turn left up the drive to Doyden Point where you'll get a closer view of Doyden Castle. Return to the coast path and turn left to follow it across the slopes. Continue up around the field, over the high slate stile and onto the road.
Step 5
Turn left and follow the road for about 200m down to Port Quin. There's a small National Trust car park here, so it's possible to start the walk from this point. However, space is limited and the car park fills up quickly.
Step 6
From Port Quin, head back up the road, keeping the sea to your right. After 3/4 mile, turn right at Tresawl bungalow. Pass the drive to Epphaven House and soon afterwards bear left. Continue ahead, go through the gate and take the path on the left down to the cove. At the coast path, turn left and retrace your steps to Lundy beach, where there's an alternative inland path at Step 2. At Markham's Quay, turn left and head back to the car park.

Enjoy a walk that takes in the spectacular Pentire Point and the Rumps. The circular route starts at the main car park at Pentireglaze where there are toilets and a café (check for opening).

Just a mile or so before you reach New Polzeath, there's a sheltered valley where light woodland and scrub lead to a gem of a rocky bay, with sandy coves at low tide.
