For several Denney Edition events, food historian and cook Sam Bilton has served up recipes by Elizabeth David, one of the most celebrated cookbook writers of all time.
Denney’s professional relationship with David is explored in the exhibition, as he was said to be the only photographer she would trust for her publications.
In December 2019, Sam Bilton hosted a talk and tasting on historical Yuletide favourites. Then, in March 2020, the Hayloft was the setting for a sold-out supper club, cooked up by Sam. Diners enjoyed a six-course feast of some of David's recipes, featured in British Vogue editions 1956/7, photographed by Denney in the mid 1950s.
Sam Bilton is a food historian, writer and cook with a ‘penchant for the edible delights of yesteryear’. With inspirations including Mrs Beeton’s Cookery Book and Leith’s, she is a frequent guest on BBC Radio Surrey and Sussex. Sam hosts intimate historically themed dinners at her home in Sussex using old recipes to create modern interpretations of the food eaten by our ancestors.
