Please book ahead before visiting

The garden and estate at Scotney Castle will reopen from Wednesday 3 June and you’ll need to book your tickets by 3.00pm the day ​before your visit. Members can book for free, while non-members will need to pay when booking. We'll be releasing tickets every Friday. Please note we’ll be turning people away who arrive and haven't booked. We're looking forward to welcoming you back.

Eating at Scotney Castle 

Our tea-room is now open daily, 10am-4pm, and will initially be serving a range of takeaway hot and cold drinks, a selection of sandwiches, cream teas, cheese scones, a selection of cakes, confectionary and local ice-cream. There will also be gluten free cakes available. A designated picnic area is available with seating, please ask a member of staff for details. Our courtyard kiosk will be open at weekends, 11am-4pm, serving hot and cold drinks and ice-cream. We’ve introduced new safety measures including closure of our seating areas, screens at our till and collection points, and waymarked routes. We’ll also only be accepting card payment. We look forward to welcoming you back and know that you will support us to make this a safe experience for everyone.

Our shop is reopening from 13 July. For the safety of staff and visitors we've introduced social distancing measures and changes to payment, which will be via card only. It is through your purchases that we are able to continue looking after Scotney Castle for everyone, for ever.

The history of Scotney Castle 

Scotney Castle has a long and rich history dating from 1137 and holds some interesting stories about the last inhabitants of the castle, the Hussey family, as well as a former Prime Minister too.

What is the picturesque?  

The picturesque is an aesthetic category developed in the eighteenth-century. It was associated with fashionable landscape gardening, however its cultural significance extended far beyond this.
