Christmas at Speke Hall
Christmas in a country house is a very special time and this year we're stepping back in time to revisit some of Speke's most lavish Christmas celebrations. Join us for Victorian fun, feasting and festivities.
We haven't lost any of the old Victorian traditions. The outdoors comes indoors as we decorate all the rooms and corridors on the ground floor with huge handmade greenery garlands. It wouldn't be Christmas without a tree and the high ceilings in the Great Hall make it the perfect place for one. Even the servants quarters get spruced up, albeit in slightly less glamorous style - think paper chains instead of baubles.
If you want to experience this magical time of year for yourself, come along on the weekends of 25 & 26 November and 2, 3, 9 & 10 December. We're open from 11am to 4pm and in the afternoons there'll be lots of extra activities and festive fun taking place in the house from 12.30pm. Listen to carols at Home Farm, try out sugar mice making (bonus points if you manage not to eat the mouse before you're back at the car!), enjoy festive storytelling and solve the Christmas trails inside and out.
Father and Mrs Christmas will be here in the Grotto between 11am and 3.30pm on all of those dates but tickets sell out fast so grab yours now! If you've prebooked, please make sure you're here in plenty of time.
Home Farm will be getting into the holiday spirit too. The shop will be full of goodies for anyone who hasn't finished present shopping yet and the festive menu in the restaurant is a definite must. If you're in the mood for a stroll, why not buy a bag of freshly roasted chestnuts from our seller and warm your hands while you enjoy a winter walk around the grounds?
If your days are full at that time of year but you're looking for an evening activity instead then why not book some tickets for one of our Evenings of Festive Music? Wonderful local choirs will be performing carol concerts in the Great Hall on 6, 7 & 8 December. Explore the ground floor, take a seat in the atmospheric Great Hall and really get into the Christmas spirit. Mince pies and hot drinks will be served after the performance as an extra treat.
Tickets cost £14 for adults, £7 for children and can be purchased online – visit our events page for further details.
If you'd like to learn how our beautiful garlands are made, why not book a place on one of our Christmas Decorating Workshops? These will held at 1pm on 22 & 23 November and are the perfect way in get in the Christmas spirit with a guided tour of the decorated ground floor of the Hall before making your own garland to take home!
