Travel the green way and help us preserve this special place. Set out from Altrincham Interchange, a lively transport hub offering rail, Metrolink, and local bus services through the Bee Network. From there, embark on a scenic, roughly 3-mile route to the historic gem of Dunham Massey. Halve this walk by taking the 280 bus from Altrincham Interchange to a convenient stop just outside Dunham Massey's entrance, or back to the interchange after a busy day at Dunham Massey, which takes just 10 minutes.

    Start point

    Altrincham Interchange, Stamford New Road, Altrincham WA14 1EN

    Stage 1

    This walk starts at the Altrincham interchange (train, tram & bus). From here turn left (south west) onto Stamford New Road West, then take the first right on to Cross Street. Keep straight on up Shaw's Road and, after passing the Market Hall on your left, turn left on to Market street. Take the first right along Regent Road and using the pedestrian crossings, cross Regent Road to get on to Dunham Road (A56)

    Stage 2

    Carefully cross the main A56 Dunham Road and turn left, take the second right onto Highgate Road, then on to Gorsey Lane. After 600m turn left onto Oldfield Road for 150m onto Seamon’s Road. Pass the shops (to your right) and carefully cross the bridge over the canal.

    Stage 3

    On the other side turn left and drop down onto the canal towpath. Turn right (west) and follow the Bridgewater Canal for 2.5km (passing under two road bridges) until you reach a third bridge over a road, on Woodhouse Lane.

    Stage 4

    Cross the bridge, then leave the canal path and drop down onto Woodhouse Lane.

    Stage 5

    Turn right and go under the canal.

    Stage 6

    Then turn second right to enter Dunham Massey

    Stage 7

    Head through the Visitor Centre entrance (refreshments, information and toilets) and if you are not visiting the House and/or Garden (tickets from reception) continue into the deer park. Follow the path up the hill through the double deer gate and you are in Dunham Massey's estate. Enjoy a day at Dunham Massey and when you're ready return to the double deer gate for the next steps.

    Stage 8

    With the double deer gate at your back, follow the path beside the moat, passing the clock tower on your right, and carry on straight towards the Mill.

    Stage 9

    Turn left just before the Mill and follow the path straight on, to the path junction with the House on your left

    Stage 10

    Take the third path on the right and follow it along a tree-lined avenue, north-east across the deer park to the park exit stile onto Charcoal Road.

    Stage 11

    Carefully cross Charcoal Road. Slightly to the right on the other side, take the first footpath left through a wood leading to Dunham New Park and the golf course. Follow Dunham Forest Golf Club blue & white signs, carefully crossing the course, and turning right at the third sign, onto a track.

    Stage 12

    At a path crossroads, carry on straight to join a track. You will see a footpath sign, turn right and continue straight on, past a metal gate on your left, to Bradgate Road. Look out for the street signs as you make your way back. Cross Bradgate Road and Highgate Road to continue along the main A56 Dunham Road. At St Margaret's Church, use the pedestrian crossing to cross the road to turn right into St Margaret's Road, then turning left on to Groby Road, right into Regent Road and left along Market Street to reach the Market Hall. Turn right on to Shaw's Road, continue straight on to Cross Street, then left on to Stamford New Road to reach Altrincham Interchange.
