Women in Conservation Practical Work Party

Looking for a way to get outdoors and learn a new skill? Join this Women in Conservation Practical Work Party. Open to beginners wanting to learn the traditional technique of coppicing to more experienced conservationists.

  • Booking essential
  • Free event (admission applies)

The South Cumbria and North Lancashire National Trust ranger team are welcoming all women to our Women in Conservation Practical Work Party. You don’t need any experience, just the passion to learn and pick up a pair of bowsaw and loppers. Our female ranger team will be here to guide, teach and work alongside you. We will create a safe and unintimidating space, where you can be with like-minded people who are also interested in nature and our local environment. Coppicing is a traditional technique used for hundreds of years. Coppicing helps create a mosaic of habitats, creating glades which allow our phenomenal wildflowers to grow, providing habitat and food source to species big and small. The wood cut then gets collected as bean poles, hedge stakes and brash piles, used as habitat for the wildlife of the woods. It will be a great opportunity to gain experience for those looking to enter into the conservation sector, and for those who just want to spend a day in the woods! In the afternoon, for those who would like to stay, we’ll go for a small walk around the site and talk about the wildlife and ecology of Sizergh. Brews and cake provided!

Accessibility

Close to the main Sizergh carpark, it will be a 1km walk to our worksite. The closest toilet facilities will be back at the carpark. We will mainly be walking on main paths that may be muddy this time of year but accessible. The area we will be working in is quite flat, apart from coppiced stumps, mud and bramble. It is also limestone which maybe slippery when wet.
