A rare surviving pair of companion globes crafted by the finest globemaker of his time has returned to Ham House and Garden after undergoing careful conservation.
The globes, one terrestrial and one celestial, were made by esteemed 18th-century cartographer John Senex. They have been in the collection at Ham House since at least the mid-1700s and were made at a time when Western understanding of the world was expanding and uncharted seas and land were being mapped out.
The specialist conservation work done by Sylvia Sumira – one of few accredited conservators of antique printed globes – showed they were constructed using pages from books.
Visit us 14 June to 2 November to discover more and see the globes on display.
