Heritage Open Days
Enjoy free entry into Gibside for Heritage Open Days on Friday 11, Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 September.
- Booking not needed
- Free event
Celebrate Heritage Open Days with a long weekend of free entry and a rare chance to explore parts of Gibside that are usually closed to the public.
Across all three days, the chapel crypt will be open for visitors to step inside one of the estate’s most intriguing historic spaces.
On Friday, there’ll be extra activities to bring the past to life, from traditional demonstrations to hands‑on moments like apple pressing.
On Saturday and Sunday, The Landmark Trust will open the doors of the Banqueting House for special tours*. This elegant Georgian building is normally off‑limits, making it a real treat for anyone interested in architecture and history.
Some of you will be drawn to historic corners or hiking through nature to spot early roosting red kites. Others will be here for a relaxed day out with your children, letting little ones run off steam in one of Gibside's play spaces. However the day unfolds, the weekend offers space to explore at your own pace and enjoy Gibside in a way that feels easy and unhurried.
*tours must be booked via the Landmark Trust.

Heritage Open Day is a popular day for everyone to enjoy. Please expect busier than usual car parking. We recommend travelling by foot, bike or public transport because the car park has limited capacity. Visiting on the Friday will also provide a quieter experience.
