Mount Stewart Stories Day

Come along to learn about the history of Mount Stewart and share your own memories of the place. We want to hear from you!

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event

Mount Stewart, home to the powerful Londonderry family, is one of Northern Ireland's most significant estates.

‘Mount Stewart Stories’ is part of the Historic Houses Global Crossroads project which seeks to explore everyone's stories and memories connected to our region's historic houses.

The event will start with a few short talks . The project lead, Professor Joy Porter will introduce the project and Professor Olwen Purdue, Director of the Centre for Public History at Queen's University Belfast, will give a short introduction to the history of the ‘Big House’ in Northern Ireland. Frances Bailey, Senior National Curator Emerita at The National Trust, will then introduce the Londonderry family and their local and global connections. Mary Lappin will introduce Desire Paths to Belonging: BeHere, a new exhibition exploring what Mount Stewart means to local people.

Then we want to hear from you! Do you have memories, objects or photos connected with Mount Stewart? Please bring them along, and the stage will be yours! Or, if you prefer to share your story quietly with a researcher, that’s OK too. Refreshments will be served.

Whether you have a deep connection with Mount Stewart or just want to learn more about this iconic place, your presence is valuable. The stories and ideas you share will be added to a permanent archive to help future generations understand Mount Stewart.

The event is free and tickets are limited so please book your space via the link.
