Orangery and walled garden tours

A secret door in a wall. Where will it lead? Take a sneak peek in this behind the scenes tour to explore the stories and people behind this historically productive area, which is rarely open for public view.

Who were John Arnold, the Weeder Women, and the Bothy Boys? In this volunteer led, behind the scenes tour, you will discover more about the long and varied history of this productive part of the estate and the characters behind its construction. You will also see some of the current work being undertaken by the Wentworth Castle Gardens team to breathe life back into this once busy area.

Get close to conservation work on structures built to protect non-native plants, including heated walls and the partially restored orangery. Due to their clever construction these walls supported the growth of fruits like peach, apricot, cherry and quince, rare treats in 18th century Northern England! For what 21st century purpose could this area be used? Maybe you will have some ideas for us!

Please note: this is not an active cultivated walled garden. The site is a wild, work in progress landscape with uneven ground, derelict structures and active storage areas. The value of the tour lies in the stories, history and conservation insight rather than a horticultural display.

This area is not usually open for public view and as such is uneven with no proper paths. Please wear sturdy footwear.
