Walking trail

The route around Wembury Point is the perfect place for a ‘maritime walk’; let your gaze wander out to sea and watch the ships and boats on the water. This guide will help you to understand the variety of watercraft on our coastal waters and enable you to see more than just dots on the horizon.

From the car park, walk down the slipway towards Wembury Beach, passing the Old Mill Café on your left. Take the coast path on the right, running behind the beach, and follow it westwards along the cliffs.

After about 20 minutes of walking, turn right (signposted to Spring Road) along the narrow path. At the next fork, take the left-hand path, climbing through hawthorn, blackthorn and elder scrub.

The path emerges onto Marine Drive, the access road to the former HMS Cambridge. The site has been narrowed and returned to grassland. Turn left along the road towards the sea. Follow the drive and after the gate continue to Wembury Point itself with a view of Plymouth Sound (for a shorter walk go down the path on the left towards the foreshore).

Pass through the five-bar gate and follow the track towards Heybrook Bay. Turn sharp left, following the way-marker onto the coast path.

Follow the coast path to reach a short detour to the beach and its 19th-century boathouse. Continue back along the coast path to Wembury.

Level with some steep climbs. The trail can be muddy following wet weather. Take care when walking near the cliff edge. Dogs are not permitted on Wembury Beach between May and September.

How to get here

Wembury Beach, Wembury, Devon
By train

Plymouth station, 7 miles (11km).

By road

3.5 miles (5.5km)  from A379 at Elburton, follow signs for Wembury.

By foot

Join the walk from the South West Coast Path at Heybrook Bay or Bovisand.

By bus

City Bus 49, Plymouth to Heybrook Bay (limited service).

By bicycle

Undulating cycle ride from Plymouth to Wembury along fairly busy A roads and quieter rural roads. National Cycle Network Route 2 and Route 27 pass through Plymouth. See Sustrans website for more information.
