Penny Rock beach
Penny Rock beach has it all, stunning views, glistening lake water, tons of fun things to do and it’s easily accessible. It’s just an easy stroll from Grasmere village along a moderately level lakeshore path with plenty of fun to be had along the way, be sure to look out for the hollow tree - a great spot for hide and seek. Let the kids paddle in the lake and go exploring in nearby Deerbolts Wood.
This is a great option for those wanting to earn their lunch with a walk. Alcock Tarn lies 1,000 feet above Grasmere village so the three mile walk up to it will give you plenty of opportunity to build up an appetite for the feast ahead.
The views are unparalleled and there are plenty of grassy areas around the tarn making it perfect for a picnic and maybe even a spot of minnow catching. So once your appetite is satiated and you are re-hydrated grab your net, get your socks off and catch yourself some minnows.
It’s very easy to lose a whole day at Allan Bank; combine an exploration of the house and its woodland grounds with a picnic on the lawn. There are lawn games and activities for the kids (young and old) and stunning views out over Grasmere Lake.
Allan Bank is just a short stroll from Grasmere village and with facilities on site it’s a great option for those who want to enjoy the outdoors without going too far – particularly if you’re not sure of the weather.
Short on time or just passing through? Then Moss Parrock is the picnic spot for you. Situated in the centre of Grasmere village, this lovely little green is a great spot to perch on a bench or relax on the grass as you watch the world go by and nibble something tasty.
Sour Milk Ghyll
Perch on the rocks and admire the tumbling falls as you scoff something scrummy at Sour Milk Ghyll. The falls are named after the milky appearance of the frothy white cascades, it’s a very pretty spot, easily reached on foot from Grasmere village. If you’re feeling daring you could even go for a paddle in the plunge pool at the bottom of the falls, particularly inviting on hot summers' day.
So, whether you have 10 minutes or a whole day to spare, grab something yummy and head to one of our favourite picnic spots. Or better still, go exploring and find your own special place.
