Christmas at Basildon Park: Lights & Liminality

A view of Basildon Park and the mansion during a frosty Winter sunrise.

Experience the Wintry Woodland at Basildon Park - both indoors and out.

As the world has changed around us over the last year, we have been suspended in a liminal space. This season at Basildon Park we celebrate the opportunity to let our senses lead us through this transition. We invite you to discover new ways to explore light and space as we usher nature indoors and enjoy the sensory delights of Winter.

This season at Basildon Park we will be offering our visitors quality time with all nature has to offer, in the setting of our grand house as well as our historic woodland.

See how nature can be repurposed inside the house, with the staircase hall adorned with a forest of pine trees.

Step through old thresholds into new fantastical memories by booking an exclusive Candlelight Evening Tour of the house.

Sense the wonder of the plants and animals that call Basildon Park home as you forage for craft-making materials in the Illuminated Wintry Woodland or on our self-led trail experiences.

What new perspectives will you find with us this Winter?

'Christmas at Basildon Park: Lights & Liminality' runs from 17 Nov - 5 Jan (property closed on 24 & 25 Dec). Please check our website homepage for our opening times.

Inside the House

This year the house will be transformed into a winter wonderland, with a forest of pine trees adorning the Staircase Hall and the Dining Room transformed into an indoor terrarium. As you step inside you’ll be transported into a liminal space, where nature fills the interior of the main showrooms. With the sounds of woodland animals, the feel of trees brushing past you and the smell of dried oranges and cinnamon, the house will be a delight for the senses.

This year we are also hosting exclusive Candlelight Tours of the house on selected evenings in November and December. Please visit the ‘What’s On’ section on the homepage of our website for more information and to book tickets, which will go live soon.

Parkland Walks

There are four way marked routes in the parkland, with fantastic views of the mansion and parkland. There are also shorter walks available, with hard standing paths in the gardens. Take a photo of the map from Visitor Reception and get some fresh air outside, with some warming hot drinks afterwards available in the tea-room.

Take part in Percy the Park Keeper's winter wander trail

We're inviting you to embark on Percy the Park Keeper's winter wander trail at Basildon Park. Join in the fun with Percy and his animal friends and give nature a helping hand.

Percy the Park Keeper Trail packs will be avaliable to purchase from Visitor Reception, as well as information on self-guided outdoor winter experiences for our adult visitors.

Why not learn everything that the parkland has to teach us this season?

Illuminated Wintry Woodland

Liminality is all about transition - the old, the new, and what that space in between might offer us. The Illuminated Wintry Woodland next to the Stableyard takes a space full of shadow and mystery throughout the Autumn months, and transforms it into a space of Winter hope and reflection. Not to mention, a fantastic festive photo opportunity!

Please note that we may have to turn off the lights off during wet weather for the safety of our woodland inhabitants, visitors, and staff.

Need to buy a last minute Christmas gift? Complete your visit to Basildon Park with a visit to the Stableyard shop, just a few yards from the car park. You'll find a wide range of items, from seasonal gifts and accessories, to garden furniture and plants.

Tea room

Warm up with a hot drink in the tea room, located on the ground floor of the mansion. The tea room will be serving festive treats, such as mince pies, and you may be able to have some lunch inspired by traditional Christmas ingredients, such as turkey and cranberry sandwiches. On busier days, such as weekends, the Toolshed kiosk in the stableyard will also be open, where you'll be able to grab a drink or snack at the beginning of your visit.

Basildon Park is closed on 24 and 25 December to allow our teams time off with their loved ones.
