Ralph Allen buys the stone mines in Combe Down, 1726

For hundreds of years good-quality stone had been quarried and mined from nearby Combe Down, south of Bath. Ralph Allen spotted this as a business opportunity.

Ralph Allen builds a railway track to transport stone to Bath, 1730

In order to transport his stone from the quarries, Ralph Allen built a railway for £10,000 to bring the stone down to Bath. You can see the railway in the image.

Work begins on the garden, 1730

In the mid 1730's, work began on the garden. The poet, Alexander Pope, gave advice on parts of the garden.
