Meet our gardener in charge at Hill Top
Meet one of our gardening professionals at Hill Top. Pete is in charge of gardening here and his job is varied and fun-filled. Any pesky rabbits to deal with, Pete?
Name: Pete Tasker
Job: Gardener in charge
Location: South Lakes - especially Hill Top
'I’m Pete Tasker and I’m the Gardener in Charge for the National Trust’s South Lakes area.
'A large part of my job is to look after Beatrix Potter’s garden at Hill Top, but I'm also involved in work with volunteers at the walled vegetable garden at Monk Coniston.
'I also maintain the gardens at any vacant National Trust cottages that are awaiting renovations and new tenants.
'I started work for the National Trust in 1988 after a three-year Horticulture course at Askham Bryan College near York and a three-year stint working at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Over the last 20-odd years I’ve been responsible for many of the Trust's gardens in the lakes including Stagshaw, Townend, Wordsworth House and High Close.
'Gardening in the Lake District can certainly be a challenge but living in such a beautiful part of the country more than makes up for it.'
