Old Mill Cottage, Herefordshire

Brockhampton Estate, Herefordshire 

In the heart of the Herefordshire countryside Old Mill Cottage is situated in the dip of the valley surrounded by picturesque woodland. Dating back to the 15th century, it has a beamed living room complete with inglenook fireplace and is reached via a footbridge over a stream. The market town of Bromyard, with its independent shops, cafes and pubs is within easy distance of the cottage.

Ticknall Lodge on the Calke Abbey Estate, Derbyshire

Calke Abbey, Derbyshire 

Ticknall Lodge is one of five holiday cottages to choose from on the Calke Abbey estate, and provides comfortable accommodation with great character. There’s plenty to see on the estate, but in autumn the woodland walks are the stars of the show. Head out on foot to find the ‘Old Man of Calke’, a veteran oak tree which is thought to be over 1,200 years old.

Set high above the Thames with far-reaching views, Cliveden’s impressive gardens and majestic woodlands capture the grandeur of a bygone age. The formal gardens give way to secluded glades, tree-lined avenues and picturesque riverside with miles of woodland walks to discover. New Cottage and Ferry Cottage, both sleeping four, offer the chance to experience Cliveden after the visitors have gone home.

Combe Park Lodge, Devon

Tucked away in the East Lyn Valley, this Edwardian cottage cannot be beaten for its variety of local walking trails through beautiful landscapes, which become a riot of colour during the autumn months. From the stunning sea cliffs of Countisbury to the wooded East Lyn River there is something to suit all tastes, and after a day exploring you can snuggle up in front of the cottage’s cosy open fire.

Florence Court, County Fermanagh 

Florence Court, one of Ulster's most important 18th century houses is surrounded by a large area of parkland, garden and woodland. In autumn they're alive with a riot of reds, oranges, yellows and browns.

Ickworth, Suffolk 

The Round House is a former shooting lodge and gamekeeper’s cottage, which has been carefully restored and now offers the luxury of modern living. Tucked away in a secluded woodland glade on the Ickworth estate, the cottage is often surrounded by wildlife including numerous birds. It’s also not unusual to wake up and find wild deer grazing in the garden.

Cutmadoc holiday cottage

Lanhydrock, Cornwall 

Hidden away in its own delightful secluded garden, Cutmadoc is a large, villa-style cottage with views over Lanhydrock's historic parkland. Guests can enjoy peaceful wanders through 900 acres of historic woodland, or for the more adventurous there are approximately 10km of off-road cycle trails and a cycle skills area in the nearby woodland.

Nant Las holiday cottage in Snowdonia

Nant Las, Snowdonia 

This pretty pink cottage lies in a secluded woodland setting on the Dolmelynllyn estate within the Snowdonia National Park. It was once an astronomical observatory for Dolmelynllyn Hall, but now offers cosy accommodation for a romantic getaway. There are miles of tranquil forest walks in all directions, or you can go in search of Rhaiadr Ddu, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Wales.

Woodlands Cottage on the Nymans estate

Nymans, West Sussex 

Once the home of the estate gamekeeper, Woodlands Cottage is situated in the heart of Nymans woods. In autumn the surrounding tree canopy is a mosaic of coppers and yellows punctuated by evergreens. This out-of-the-way retreat is surrounded by plenty of walking trails to explore; and don’t forget to keep an eye out for the estate’s giant redwood tree, which stands at over 50m tall.

Stourhead's holiday cottage

Stourhead, Wiltshire 

With a lake at its centre, Stourhead is a world-famous landscape garden. Dotted with classical temples and mystical grottoes, and planted with rare and exotic trees autumn colours wash through the landscape. This pretty stone cottage is set at the entrance to the garden. Sleeping seven it allows guests to enjoy the dazzling displays before visitors arrive.

Wood Farm holiday cottage

Sheringham Park, Norfolk  

Wood Farm is situated within Sheringham Park and is set in its own enclosed garden on the edge of mature woodland. There are numerous trails for walking and cycling, right from the front door. And in spring and early summer there are spectacular blooms of rhododendrons and azaleas.
