Garden Fun at Mr Straw's House
As summer rolls around the Straw’s orchard and garden spaces come into their own.
After working up an appetite exploring the house why not take advantage of the picnic tables scattered in the orchard to enjoy your sandwiches and snacks. If you haven’t packed any food you could always choose from our range of packaged cakes and crisps, or order some hot drinks or a refreshing lemonade to enjoy outside.
If that all sounds far too laid back, why not keep the family busy with our summer trail, the Poster Puzzle? Fugitive fruits are hiding out in the orchard, scattering the letters missing from our wartime posters. Can you track them all down and unscramble the letters to discover the missing words and solve the puzzle?
If that doesn’t whet your appetite why not put down the phones and tech and get the family together to give our traditional games a whirl. Challenge one another to a friendly round of hoopla, or set up the wooden pins and try out your throwing arm with a game of Smite.
If you’re trying to achieve all of the 50 Things to do before you’re 11 ¾ then look no further than the orchard. The Straw’s took advantage of all their green space and planned in meticulous detail the things they would grow, including the varieties of apple, pear and plum. You could tick off No.1 Get to know a tree, or go hunting in the nooks and crannies of the bark for No. 31 Make friends with a bug.
If that all sounds far too energetic you could always help yourselves to our supply of picnic rugs and sprawl out on the grass to watch the clouds float by. What animals or shapes might you see soaring overhead? Perhaps you could draw a picture of them for No.33 Go cloud watching.
Additional 50 Things activities will be available at different points throughout the season, or you could always pair your visit to Mr Straw’s with a trip to Clumber Park, another National Trust property around a quarter of an hour’s drive away.
