Activities at Nostell Priory

Children in a den at Nostell Priory, West Yorkshire

Here at Nostell we have plenty of things to see and do with a whole range of activities running throughout the year. As part of the National Trust’s joint partnership with Sport England we’ve lots of opportunities to try different sporting activities within our grounds.

February half-term

Join us for two weeks of family activities this holiday. Wild Mondays and Tuesdays are all about messy bird feeder and bird box making and learning a little bit about how we look after Nostell's feathered friends, in celebration of National Bird Box Week. Bring your bikes for Cycle Wednesdays and get creative Wednesday - Friday with crafts inspired by Nostell.

During half-term, we've also special pre-bookable introduction to trail cycling sessions, in partnership with Trail Advantage on Sunday 18 and Saturday 24 February.

Sports and activities

Whether you fancy a gentle jog around the parkland or a cycle ride further afield come and find out what exciting activities Nostell has to offer. With all-weather paths that stretch up to Obelisk Lodge, you can explore the parkland whatever the season.

Running

With over 300 acres of parkland to explore the Nostell estate is the perfect place for a gentle jog or longer run. Follow the paths through peaceful woodland, enjoy lakeside views and discover the Obelisk Lodge. If you need a bit of motivation to get you going, we have a Saturday morning parkrun throughout the year and a beginners running club on Monday evenings, April - September. Check our what's on page for details.

Cycling

There are plenty of routes through the estate to explore on two wheels, including two bike-only trails through beautiful woodland. Perfect for families, the green cycle-only route is best for little legs and the blue route has a few more ups and downs for a bit more of a challenge. Download the trail at the bottom of the page for more details.

Visit our stables courtyard where you will find secure cycle racks and essential tools to borrow for any running repairs.

If you like riding with company, look out for the easy led cycle rides organised by Wakefield Disrict Cycle Forum every first Tuesday and third Sunday of the month.

Walking

Nostell parkland is an ideal place to bring the family for a walk in the fresh air through rolling landscapes, woodland and meadows. Grab a map and follow our marked trails to explore for yourself, or join one of our many guided walks if you prefer to walk in company.

We've two great trails to download below, which take in some of Nostell's stunning views.

Geocaching

Joint the digital treasure hunt and find the caches at Nostell - we have more than ten in the parkland!

Not tried it before? Don't have a GPS unit? Then join one of our organised events where you can borrow a Garmin handset, learn the basics and try out our taster caches.

Den building

Create your own secret hideaway and tick off one of those '50 Things to do before you're ¾'. Head to Joiner's Wood where you'll find handy tips on the best sticks for your woodland structure. Simply have a go or join one of our organised events.
