Meet the volunteers: Roshni Vergese
Room Guide, Penrhyn Castle
Without them we wouldn't be able tolook after all our special plces, so this Volunteers Week we decided to get to know them a little better. Meet Roshni:
What you do in your role:
Meet and greet the visitors, always with as charming a smile as I can make it, in whichever room I am given for the day, offer help and information and if taken up tell them the relevant details contained in the room.
How long have you been volunteering?
This is my 5th season.
Why do you volunteer?
I love heritage, history, art and antiques and I love people, most of them any way! For me it is a pleasure to read, research and be a source of information for those interested. Besides I love the company and camaraderie of my colleagues.
Do you volunteer anywhere else?
I am a Street Pastor in Bangor which means that a team of four of us are out on Friday/Saturday nights from 10 pm to around 4 am, longer if needed, making sure that the streets are safe for those out enjoying, drinking, being sick, unable to walk due to ridiculously high heels coupled with one too many drinks or in any other form of distress.
Coffee or tea?
Not sure what this means! Love both!!
Tell us something about your background.
Come from working in Human Resources or General Management. Love people, love walking, music, dancing, gardening, reading and travel.
" I love heritage, history, art and antiques and I love people, most of them any way!"
If a film was made of your life – who would play you?
Love to say Julia Roberts but she is far too pretty; Angelina Jolly may be but she is out for the same reason; Meryl Streep, she will be all right for the accent; better if I play my own role, I am difficult to model!
Tell us something that nobody at the NT knows about you.
Just how lovely I am by nature!!!
When you were a child, what did you want to be and why?
Wanted to wear shorts and T shirts and no shoes and climb trees and play cricket; no girls in my family did that kind of thing! As I said they were all too pretty and lady like! I am no lady.
Which do you prefer: A good book or good film?
Good book any day.
Who’s your hero?
Martin Luther King; I have a dream of a world where fairness and justice reign; where all are equal with level playing fields; where families are not broken; where little children are safe; where older people are treated with regard. A dream, all the same...
