Christmas at Rainham Hall
This year we will be celebrating Christmas as our John Harle would have done three hundred years ago; there will be Frost Fayres, evenings spent drinking gin punch, fabulous decorations and a twelfth night party to finish it all off.
Come and visit our beautifully decorated Hall, decked with traditional greenery, and wander in and out of the rooms whilst imagining how John and Mary Harle would have celebrated Christmas in their home. Afterwards, you can pop into our café for a festive toasty accompanied by a luxurious cinnamon hot chocolate… and why not spoil yourself with a homemade mince pie for dessert!
The Stables Café and Gardens are open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am - 5pm in November and December; the Hall will be open Friday to Sunday from 10am - 5pm (last entry at 4.30pm).
There are some great events planned this winter. You can help us decorate the Hall at our Deck the Halls event or party like it's 1729 at our Twelfth Night Party.
Deck the Hall!
Friday 25 November 12noon-2pm
Come and help us decorate! We will be making greenery swags, kissing boughs and garlands for the Hall and Stables Café. You will discover how the Georgians gave their homes the festive touch and have the chance to take home a few tips. Donations of yew, spruce, ivy, bay, rosemary and other greenery would be greatly appreciated!
Rainham Hall Frost Fayre
Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 November 2016, 12-4pm
We will be beginning our Christmas celebrations by reimagining a winter tradition that John Harle would have known very well - as a man who once lived and worked on the Thames - the Frost Fayre! When the river froze over in they would set up stalls and entertainment on the ice. Our celebrations will include stalls selling gifts from local designer makers accompanied by music and merriment.
Rainham Village Christmas
3 December 2016, 12-4pm
We are excited to be taking part in this festive village tradition! Come and join us for hot chocolate, mince pies and family activities.
Gin & Gingerbread
22 December 2016, 6pm-9pm
Tickets: £18 (includes entry to the Hall, the workshop and one complimentary drink)
Join us for an evening of Gin and Gingerbread at Rainham Hall as we celebrate Christmas with an eighteenth century twist. You will have a chance to explore the Hall in all its festive glory and discover how homes were decorated for Christmas three-hundred years ago. Jensen Gin will be in residence for the evening recreating traditional gin recipes for you to try with a piece of gingerbread. There will also be the chance to make you own traditional decoration in our mini Christmas workshop.
Twelfth Night Party
Friday 6 January 2016, 6pm-9pm
Join us for a Twelfth night party like no other! The Georgians loved to party on Twelfth Night to celebrate the end to the festive season! Our evening will revisit the tradition. We will be joined by guest musicians performing eighteenth century pieces on the Harpsichord and singing traditional songs. There will be fun games and a decorated twelfth night cake. It will also be the last chance to see John Harle before our exhibitions change in the New Year.
