Story Competition Winner at Rainham Hall

We asked our younger visitors to write a story based on one of our most popular exhibits - the boat in the bath on the first floor of the Hall. Children were encouraged to let their imagination run wild, be adventurous and tell us the story behind the boat in the bath. We had some great entries with stories ranging from repentant pirates to magical necklaces and daydreams taking people to faraway islands and adventures.

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the story competition is Xavier Gillooly (age 6 years 10 months at the time of writing). Xavier’s imaginative story (featuring pandas and crabs) really impressed the judges. Congratulations to Xavier whose story is printed below.

Once upon a time a ship sailed the Mever Sea and came across a whirlpool which gulped the ship. 1000 years passed and the realm had fairies, wizards and witches. The fairies were good but the wizards and witches were not. The fairies were always in danger of capture by the wizards and witches as they could drain the fairies’ powers. The most powerful fairy was the sea fairy but she was captured and so lost her powers. The Master found out and sent for the crabs. The crabs set off fireworks to land in the sea. This created a whirlpool which worked in reverse and threw a ship from the bottom of the sea to the top of the water. The ship had a special crew, pandas, who were known throughout time as warriors. The pandas agreed to help the crabs as long as it was a noble quest. The crabs and the pandas set out across the seas to find the wizards and witches. After a while and several adventures later the wizards and witches were found. A great battle started with both sides using water as a weapon. The battle was so strong it shook the bottom of the sea and all the water disappeared. All the ships were grounded could not move. This meant the crabs and the pandas had to leave their ship and fight on paw and claw. With paw and claw, and sneakiness the crabs and pandas beat the wizards and witches.  The enemy released their stolen magic which allowed the sea to reappear and the drained magical creatures to have their magic back. To punish the wizards and witches the Master cursed them with good magic so they would spend the rest of their lives being nice.

" With paw and claw, and sneakiness the crabs and pandas beat the wizards and witches. "
