Room guides at Sissinghurst Castle Garden
"Sissinghurst is a haven away from the world, a place where over many centuries many people have created a richly layered beauty. Vita’s garden draws on that sense of embedded time and on the thousand-year-old landscape that surrounds it." Adam Nicolson, 2012
From 2017, we will be opening our South Cottage fully for the first time and we need volunteers to help us bring it to life. The house helps tell the story of the families who have lived here and the creators of the garden, Vita Sackville West and Harold Nicolson.
It's within the walls of South Cottage that Vita would care for her sick plants and Harold would write his many books, it's also the house where they both slept.
This year we will tell the story across our whole site of a life at Sissinghurst and how Vita and Harold were inspired to create a world famous garden.
The role will involve looking after the following areas; the garden gate, south cottage (garden room, sitting room and upstairs), the tower and could involve covering breaks in all those areas. At the time of writing, we're still working on the rota but it's likely you will be in more than one place during your day.
" Sissinghurst in winter is a wonderful place to be, it allows us to have a great chance to give our visitors a totally different experience. "
This role will suit you if you enjoy talking to groups of visitors of all ages, answering questions and adapting your knowledge to their interests.
You'll put the visitor at the heart of everything you do and enjoy learning just as much as sharing your knowledge and working with others.
We would need you to be available at least once a fortnight over the winter months for a 5 hour shift (with breaks). The role will be based inside, but flexibility may be required to assist with delivering a really good visitor experience.
