Behind closed doors

Visitors enjoying a tour of the house

Whilst Stourhead House is closed, there are still ways to see inside the house. Visit the house this January and February to see what goes on behind the scenes at this time of year.

Behind closed doors tours

This January and February join one of our volunteer guides on a tour. It's chance to see behind the normally closed doors of the house, areas which aren't usually open to the public. The tours may cover four floors, from the basement, right up to the attics, so will include many stairs. You'll be able to see how we use some of the rooms in the house today, as offices, conservation studios, and many other uses, giving you an insight into what goes on behind the scenes to care for Stourhead House and its collection.

Normal admission fees apply. There is no additional charge for our 'behind closed doors tours' but donations to support the conservation and upkeep of Stourhead would be welcome.

We recommend booking your tickets in advance, as whilst tickets may be available on the day of your visit, we can't guarantee this. Check out the upcoming events box below to book your tickets.

If you have any questions about accessibility please contact a member of the team on 01747 842020 or email us.

Winter warmers

From 29 January, the Entrance Hall of the house will be open at weekends, welcoming visitors to warm up by the fire. Volunteer guides will be on hand to share the history of the house as well as helping you to get to know the Hoare family, who created Stourhead, through their portraits.

Face coverings

Face coverings are required in indoor areas, except in cafés and tea-rooms, unless you're exempt. Thank you for supporting us to make this a safe experience for everyone.
