The Red Lion @ Kilmington
Just a mile away from Stourhead on the B3092 towards Frome, on the north-eastern edge of the estate, you will find The Red Lion @ Kilmington is a small, traditional country pub.
Originally stabling horses used to assist coaches and wagons up the adjacent Whitesheet Hill (part of an old route called Harrow Way or Hard Way, which went from Devon to Kent via Salisbury - an old milestone dated 1750 can be seen on the approach up to the hill) this 17th Century farm-workers cottage was converted into a public house by the Hoare family some 200 years later and has served the needs of generations of families who have worked and shaped the local landscape ever since.
We continue this tradition and welcome all looking for rest and refreshment. The low-beamed, flag stoned front bar with cushioned wall and window seats, curved high-backed settle and wood burners opens up into a larger, more open back bar where children are welcomed. Outside, the large garden and adjacent car-park has outstanding views of Whitesheet Hill and the surrounding downland which are easily accessible by foot to and from the pub. Dogs are welcome in both the front bar and the garden, where there is also a hitching rail for those slightly larger pets!
The Red Lion team is passionate about beer and food, using only the best local breweries, cider manufacturers, high-quality food producers and suppliers, some of whom actually farm or live in the village, and all of whom contribute to our enjoyable straightforward home-made pub lunches and suppers.
Monday to Friday will find us serving lunch from noon until 2pm. Lunch service is extended to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday when, of course, a traditional Sunday Roast is also offered.
Supper is available Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 5pm until 8pm.
We welcome walking groups and larger parties, by prior arrangement, and would always recommend booking a table if you are making a special trip. We will happily receive all bookings and enquiries by telephone: 01985 844263. More information can be found on our website.
Enjoy your visit to Stourhead and we hope to see you soon.
