Gendered Spaces and Social Status Tour

Explore how 19th century gender roles played a vital part in the architecture, working, and leisure life at Tyntesfield – and discover whether or not they are still relevant today.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

Discover the ways in which 19th century gender roles split the house at Tyntesfield into spaces for men and women, maintaining social hierarchies and creating distinct spheres for men and women that reflected their perceived roles in society.

The Gendered Spaces and Social Status Tour will explore Tyntesfield’s kitchen and butler’s pantry, taking a look into the divisive roles taken on by both male and female servants, and how those roles still exist today. The tour will also move ‘Upstairs’, looking at Victorian ideals and expectations for the Gibbs family, and how at times, Blanche and William Gibbs lived very different, and separate lives.

The tour lasts roughly 45 minutes and has a maximum capacity of 15 people per slot, so each tour fills up quickly. Please arrive early to secure your spot by picking up a token at the welcome building on your arrival.

Please be aware that this tour is led by our amazing volunteers, and so is subject to volunteer availability on the day.
