- Booking essential
Join us for a fascinating after-hours evening exploring the history of Moseley Old Hall through the eyes of a 17th-century Barber Surgeon.
The evening begins with a guided walking tour of the Hall, uncovering the stories of this remarkable house and the people who lived here. You will then take a seat in the atmospheric Dame Alice's Room for an engaging talk on the fascinating - and often gruesome - world of the Barber Surgeon. Discover how they treated everything from toothache to battlefield injuries, and learn about the realities of early modern surgery before the advent of modern anaesthetics.
This special event explores subjects not suitable for our regular daytime talks, making it ideal for those with a curiosity for the darker side of history.
The initial walking tour will last about 50 minutes, followed by a seated talk of around 30-40 minutes.
The tearoom will be open before the talk, from 6:15pm - 6:45pm, where you will be able to purchase drinks; these must be consumed before the tour begins.
Please note: This event includes discussion of historic medical procedures, including dentistry, battlefield injuries and amputation. It is intended for adults (18+) and is not recommended for the faint-hearted. The tour includes stairs and is not suitable for wheelchair users or visitors unable to walk or stand without assistance.
