This scenic trail winds past the beautifully sculpted yew topiary, the fragrant Rose Garden and the historic Hawk House, all set against the majestic backdrop of the medieval fortress.

Stage 1
Exit the car park and head to the visitor welcome centre to collect your tickets or scan your membership. Then, make your way to the shuttle bus pick-up point, where a bus will take you up to the castle. For better accessibility in the garden, we have one electric tramper available to hire from the Ticket Office- call us to book.
Stage 2
Upon reaching the portcullis, head toward the garden gate. Walk through the gate and proceed straight ahead, admiring the yew topiary lining the path. To your right, notice the castle walls adorned with Virginia creeper which turns from green in spring and summer to vibrant red in the autumn.
Stage 3
Follow the path as it bends right, leading you toward the herbaceous border. To your left, the Rose Garden comes into full bloom in summer, offering a vibrant display of colours and sweet scents. Pass under the arch and keep moving along the trail.

Stage 4
Turn left at the large yew tree and admire the long border filled with seasonal shrubs and herbaceous plants on your left.
Stage 5
Follow the path as it curves to the right, where you’ll see the pampas grass flowing gracefully, reaching its peak beauty until the first frost. As you continue, admire the rockery on your left and don’t miss the Hawk House just ahead, nestled among the landscape.

Stage 6
Continue straight ahead until you reach the Ha-Ha, where the stunning Williams Emes landscape unfolds. From here, you can choose to walk left for additional views, including The Temple or turn right to continue along the accessible route.
Stage 7
Continue along the path, passing the stumpery on your left and the pond on your right. In summer, you’ll encounter vibrant, colourful varieties of rhododendrons in full bloom. Finally, follow the path back to the garden gate.
