The Wide, Wide Sea by Anna Wilson

The Wide, Wide Sea

By Anna Wilson, Illustrated by Jenny Løvlie

£6.99

April 2021

When a young child forges a special connection with a seal on a trip to the seaside, their imagination takes them on an unforgettable journey, exploring everything the beach and wide, wide sea have to offer… until suddenly a violent storm blows in. The next morning the beach is ugly and covered in litter. Whose fault is it? Who can fix it?

Lyrical, beautiful and inspirational, this is a story of imagination, of joy in nature, and of a young child’s nascent realisation that plastic pollution is our fault, but that together we can be the solution. It is a subtle and imaginative exploration of how we can protect nature together.

About the author and illustrator

Anna Wilson has written many picture books and fiction titles. A keen wild swimmer, her passion for animals and the natural world shines through in all her work.

Jenny Løvlie grew up in Norway, spending her summers in the great outdoors climbing rocks, watching seagulls hatching, and rock-pooling. She studied illustration and animation at Kingston University, London.

Toys, games & activities

Fantastic outdoor toys, quirky pocket money ideas, wooden toys, fun family games, educational toys, pretend play ideas and gorgeous plush animals looking for a new home – we’ve got playtime covered, however old you are.

Being outdoors in nature became important to many of us over lockdown.  For families, the great outdoors became a natural playground.  50 Things to do Before you're 11 3/4 encourages these creative, educational and playful experiences.  How high can you climb? What happens when you skim a stone on the pond?  Our 50 Things range is designed to get children out and enjoying nature.  They could record their experiences in a nature diary, find the way with a compass, discover the night sky through a telescope, or build the best hideout with the Den Building Kit. We have plenty for young naturalists too, from magnifying glasses to mini beast collecting pots.

Garden & Outdoor

Our outdoor range continues to flourish. Add colour to your garden with our seasonal plants, all grown in peat-free soil for your peace of mind.

Barrington Loines art

National Trust artist Barrington Loines has created a series of striking paintings of views around the Cliveden estate.  Greetings cards and A4 prints of his work are now on sale in the shop. We hope to host a launch exhibition of Barrington's original and limited edition prints later in the year.

Weighbridge second-hand bookshop

The Weighbridge second-hand bookshop is now open daily from 11am until 5pm. Come and delve into a treasure trove of books from children's literature to cookery, and from health to history. We are very happy to accept book donations again, especially good quality children’s books, however we kindly ask that you don't bring in more than two bags/boxes at a time.

When you shop at Cliveden, you keep history alive

Everything that you buy in our gift shop goes towards the National Trust's mission of looking after special places for everyone, for ever.

All our prints this season have been inspired by rivers, forming the beautiful and diverse Riverlands range.  The National Trust has embarked on a Riverlands Project to ensure rivers and catchments are clean, healthy and rich in wildlife, while connecting people with these vital habitats to encourage sustainable long-term care of our waterways. The money raised in our shop will flow back into the project to fund this important work.

Cliveden's second-hand bookshop also achieves that aim, with the money from every sale going towards this year's fundraising project for the Water Garden.
