Walking trail

Have a go at this challenging route past Blackburn lake and Cragend quarry. This long walk takes in amazing views of the Simonside Hills and features the thatched boathouse and shepherd's hut.

Start at Blackburn car park. Head towards the back of the car park and follow the orange waymarks


Follow the path upstream past Blackburn dam

You’ll see Blackburn lake. Turn left and follow the path. At the junction, turn left

Blackburn lake, which is mostly drained


When you reach the boathouse, cross over the estate drive and continue on the path, following the orange waymarks. There is a short steep climb along the way, with a resting bench at the end.

Look out for shepherd’s hut and the stone cutting bench. When you reach Cragend car park, cross over and the orange waymarks will take you back to the boathouse and along the carriage drive back to Blackburn car park.

How to get here

Cragside, Rothbury, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE65 7PX
By road

13 miles (21km) south-west of Alnwick (B6341) and 15 miles (24km) north-west of Morpeth on Wooler road (A697), turn left on to B6341 at Moorhouse Crossroads, entrance 1 mile (1.6km) north of Rothbury.

Parking: The walk begins at Blackburn car park, accessed by car by taking the carriage drive from the main car park, through the House arches.
