A geophysics survey in 2014 confirmed that just 50 yards from
Hinton Ampner lie the foundations of a ‘haunted house’ dating from the 16th century.
Supernatural activity at the site reached a peak in the 1760s with incidents including doors slamming, the ‘rustle of silk clothing’ and ‘heavy plodding steps’ at the foot of a bed.
After decades of disuse the building’s eerie reputation finally led to its demolition in 1793.
