Musical inspiration from our special places

The choir recording 'Shards' at Sandham Memorial Chapel, Hampshire

Immerse yourself in a musical journey of our special places through Emmy award-winning instrumentalist and composer Michael Price’s new album Tender Symmetry.

In partnership with the Trust New Art team, this ambitious musical project takes in a series of iconic National Trust locations across England as its inspiration, turning them into unlikely recording spaces. Michael and a host of musicians and collaborators — including renowned soprano Grace Davidson and Shards — travelled across the country to find places as far removed as possible from traditional recording studios. Along the way, they created seven unique and moving pieces, straddling both past and future.

The diversity of Michael Price’s choices ranges from the ruins of Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire to the Fan Bay Second World War shelter, cut deep into the chalk cliffs of Dover. These special places, all but one cared for by the National Trust, became both inspiration and studio for Michael and his world class musical ensembles, choirs and soloists.
