    • A quirky cottage with rooms tucked around the original stable's features - a lovely mix of soft comforts and rustic, original features

    • Walk to the Dunham Massey estate to explore its medieval deer park and 17th-century house

    • Just a 30-minute drive from the centre of Manchester

Hempfield Stables first appears on maps in 1829 and sits in its own walled garden in lovely countryside by the canal path. It has been creatively restored and is now a comfortable holiday cottage with lots of personality and plenty of outdoor space. You’ll find some of the ground-floor rooms set within the original horses’ stalls, featuring wood panelling, exposed brick and limestone floors. Upstairs, the bedrooms are in soft, soothing colours, with pretty wallpapers and fabrics.

You’ll have free entry to National Trust places during your stay, including the Dunham Massey estate. This 300-acre, walled estate has a 17th-century Georgian house filled with treasures as its centrepiece, an ancient deer park where herds of fallow deer roam freely and a garden for all seasons. There are lots of wandering paths to follow, with leafy avenues and wide vistas.

The estate is lit up with a magical festive light trail from November to January - make sure to book this popular experience in advance.

The modern market town of Altrincham is nearby, with an award-winning food market, independent restaurants, pubs and shops. Manchester is just a 30-minute drive away, where there are plenty of places to eat and drink, plus shopping centres, theatres, cultural venues and the Castlefield Viaduct, a green ‘sky garden’ in the heart of the city. Liverpool, with its famous waterfront, is also within driving distance, where you can explore Speke Hall, a green oasis with a Tudor house on the edge of the city.

Other National Trust places nearby include Tatton Park and Lyme, famous for its reflecting lake where Mr Darcy met Miss Bennet in the BBC production of 'Pride and Prejudice'.
