Picnic and play outdoors this summer

There are endless places for play, family picnics and walks this summer in the White Peak. Pick up a 50 Things Scrapbook and see how many of the things you can tick off during your visit to the Peak District.

Play in the Peak District this summer

Ilam Park and Dovedale are popular spots for family days out during the summer months. Whether you are looking for a peaceful river bank for a picnic, or an afternoon of den building and playing pooh sticks, the White Peak is an ideal destination.

Top things you can do this summer:

Go orienteering at Ilam Park

Pick up an orienteering map from the shop at Ilam Park and explore the park as a family. This orienteering course is ideal for beginners and takes most families about an hour to complete. Along the way you'll get some far reaching views towards Dovedale, see the sheep and lambs in the parkland and pass the boil holes by the river Manifold.
£1.50 per orienteering map - available 11 - 5 daily.

Hunt for fossils in Dovedale

Become a detective in Dovedale and spot fossils in the limestone rock. These fossils are around 350 million years old! The best places to do this as a family are by Lover's Leap. You'll also see some fossils in the famous stepping stones across the River Dove.

Play in the woods at Ilam Park

Down by the river you'll discover Hinkley Hollow, a special place in the woods where you can build a den, spot birds, balance on a huge log or make a grass trumpet. A great opportunity to tick off some of the 50 Things list!

Go on a really long bike ride in the Manifold valley

With a family friendly track following the river along this quiet valley, why not have a family bike ride and picnic along the way? Listen out for birds and spot huge caves along the way.

50 Things to do before you're 11 3/4

You can pick up your free adventure scrapbook from any National Trust place, and start ticking off some of the list this summer. We think Dovedale is one of the best places to spot fossils and Ilam Park has the perfect bridge for playing pooh sticks.
