Knole's September Outdoor Cinema

A picture of actress Lily James as Cinderella, dressed in a flowing blue fairytale dress, and Ewan McGregor as Christopher Robin sitting next to Winnie the Pooh in the countryside

Imagine watching a film against a fairytale backdrop, as if the characters could walk straight off the big screen into the audience and no-one would bat an eyelid. This September for two nights only, we open up Knole’s courtyards to film-lovers of all ages for an evening of make-believe under the stars, inviting audiences to lose themselves in two very different takes on two much-loved fantasy characters.

Both family-friendly films are produced by Disney, rated PG and are suitable for everyone.

About the films

On Friday 13 September, we will be showing Christopher Robin (2018, PG, 106 mins), last year’s hit starring Ewan MacGregor and Hayley Atwell in a blend of fantasy and harsh reality. Christopher Robin finds himself a long way from Hundred Acre Wood after a stint at boarding school and time serving in the British Army. Will his old childhood pals Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger be able to reignite his sense of childlike wonder and remind him of the important things in life? Much of the filming took place in nearby Ashdown Forest, the site of the original book.

Then on Saturday 14 September, we bring you the romantic fantasy Cinderella (2015, PG, 104 mins), directed by Kenneth Branagh. Star cast Lily James, Cate Blanchett and ‘Bodyguard’ leading man Richard Madden breathe new life into this old classic, lending it a timeless message about courage and kindness no matter what the circumstances. With costumes designed by three-times Oscar winner Sandy Powell, the film received costume award nominations at the Oscars, BAFTAs and Critics Choice Awards.
