A Lantern of Light

The east front of Montacute House lit during a Lantern of Light

Brighten your winter by seeing Montacute House and Garden in a whole new light. The garden will be illuminated in atmospheric colours and tones, and the house will be glowing – lit like a lantern from within.

On weekends this winter (26 Nov – 1 Jan, excluding 24 & 25 Dec) you can enjoy Montacute in all lights with a winter stroll around the garden and look around the Elizabethan house.  Then, as dusk sets in, stay to see Montacute gradually transform into a glittering beacon.  After all, on wintry nights there is nothing more heartening than a lantern of light gleaming though the darkness.

To enjoy the garden, just turn up and explore at your own pace.  The garden, shop and cafe will be open from 11am, with the Lantern of Light experience starting from 3pm till 7pm.

The house will be open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 12 noon to 3pm for normal visiting (last entry at 2.30pm).  It will then close and timed entry for a Lantern of Light will begin at 4pm, with bookable times every 15 minutes till 5.45pm.  The house then closes again at 6.30pm.

The house is very old and can only welcome a certain number of visitors at any one time and by pre-booking you will help protect it.

Everyone (including Members) wishing to visit the inside of the house needs to:

  • Visit our Upcoming events page

  • Book an entry time to the house

  • Turn up on the day with your timed e-ticket and either pay or show your Membership card

All tickets for the house are offered on a first come, first serve basis. Normal admission prices apply.  National Trust Members must present their membership card on arrival. Some tickets may be available on the day.

Eats and treats

Warm yourself with some tasty fayre in the Courtyard Café.  A variety of seasonal dishes will be on offer, which can be eaten inside or out – you can get things to takeaway and enjoy whilst exploring the garden.

The shop will be open for those special gifts and tempting foody treats for your Christmas tables.  There is something for everyone, whether you are looking for presents for him, her or maybe something special for yourself.
